We ALL have other lives. I’m not talking about re-incarnation. I’m talking about another life in our current life.
THINK ABOUT IT. Our life growing up, in school, college, in our 20’s, 30’s, etc. is more or less another life.
This past weekend I spent time with some friends from ANOTHER LIFE. These were friends I am close to from my previous home. We connected in 2005 after one of us lost a husband in a rafting accident. After that HORRIFIC accident our friendship grew.
When this one friend lost her husband, we found a place on the ski mountain in our town to pay TRIBUTE by saying his name when we skied down a certain run, TAILGATING in this spot on the last day of the ski season, and HIKING up in the late summer. The funny thing is, is this slope is one of the steepest on the mountain and the place we picked is the steepest on the slope.
People thought we were CRAZY to hang on this slope on the last day but we had a BLAST. These yearly events were filled with LAUGHTER and TEARS.
Several years passed and two for the three of us moved away. Not far, only about 90 minutes away, but far enough to not be able to get together often.
This weekend we were brought together by the passing of a of a dog. (The same person who lost her husband almost 15 years ago). We planned to hike back up to “the spot” on this ski slope to pay tribute to our past friends, husband and now dogs.
The night before, we GATHERED at one house and started to go down memory lane. Often times one of us would say, “That was another life.” We realized how much we had FORGOTTEN about that OTHER LIFE. Out of the three of us, one of us would spark a memory and then it all came back. It was so nice to revisit lost memories and relive them again with each other.
The day of the hike, we visited the tree that was planted in his honor, then started hiking. When we made it to the top, we put out our spread of food, talked, sat in silence, and picked wild elder and blueberries on the way down.
It is so CRAZY how these events that took place so many times were so long ago. We are all in different places in our lives now and it truly does feel like it was ANOTHER LIFE.
This gathering this past weekend was so SPECIAL! It connected us back to our OTHER LIFE and made us realize how SPECIAL our time together was both in the past and on this EMOTIONAL day!
Often we take these moments and experiences for GRANTED. Once they pass, we MAY forget about them.
DO WE WANT TO FORGET ABOUT THEM?
What if we took the time to SAVOR them? What do I mean by SAVORING them?
I’m taking this FREE online class called, “The Science of Wellbeing” from Yale University. It’s about how to truly be HAPPY and JOYFUL. This week’s action steps are SAVORING your experiences. Each day we have to find an experience that brings us JOY and learn to SAVOR it. How? By sharing it with someone else, being grateful about enjoying an amazing moment, snapping a photo, and being present the entire time. When all of these actions are implemented we can SAVOR an experience for an extended period of time which keeps us happier and brings more JOY for longer periods of time.
I challenge you to start SAVORING experiences in your life. Keep track of what you are doing and notice how you feel.
